Do I need a GHIC?

Checked against nhs.uk on 7 October 2026

Yes, and it's free. It gets you state hospital treatment in Europe at local prices. It isn't insurance and won't fly you home. Apply on nhs.uk only; it takes about two weeks to arrive.

Do this

  1. Apply on nhs.uk when you book. Any site charging a fee is a copycat.
  2. Get travel insurance as well. The GHIC covers none of the expensive stuff.
